In producing this book we have tried to do two things. To entertain you by recalling memories for those of you who knew the earlier days of the Class, perhaps sailing in GP's in the 50's, or if you are a more recent member, give you an idea of the background which has led this Class to such great strengths. We have also tried to provide a more detailed history of theClass and boat than has been possible in the past. The chapters have been written by a diverse cross section of our membership. Some are reprints of articles previously published. They all have a place in the record which has defined a culture that has grown in strength continuously since the launch of the first fleet of GP14's at Aberdovey in 1950. This culture, built round friendship and fellowship, has engendered a loyalty to the Class which is second to none in the sailing world. A saying first heard many many years ago "We joined for the boat but stayed for the people," si as true today sa ti was then. We do thank the many contributors to this book. They reflect past and present views. In such circumstances, it is difficult to avoid repeating a memory of an event or a person. To edit individuals' views would spoil their contribution. We hope that where there may be slight contradictions ti may be seen as a product of our 50 years and not too serious.
