This work by E.J.Petuch and D.Sargent was a real revolution in the oliva world. In their book the Authors adopt a new systematic arrangement that recognizes 19 subgeneric groupings (10 new subgenera nemed) and about 300 species, subspecies and color forms, many described for the first time. All described shells are illustrated in 39 color plates and there are also maps showing distributions of all known species. The Authors recognized 28 new species: bathyalis, hilli, joyceae, kurzi, leonardhilli, marquesana, insecta, xenos, boholensis, davaoensis, grandicallosa, leonardi, vanuatuensis, lenhilli, antillensis, bahamasensis, barbadensis, finlay, goajira, magdae, maya, olssoni, radix, indomalaysica, mindanaoensis, raderi, westralis and zamboangensis. Many are also the subspecies. Anyway the total number of recognized species is 145. Since Edward J.Petuch is a famous paleontologist he used mainly the morphology of the shell to name those new species. E.J.Petuch named also many fossil oliva in others his books, such as “Neogene History of Tropical American Mollusks” and “Coastal Paleoceanography”. About the iconography of this book, I believe that the plates do not have good colors and they are too small.
