This book is an attempt to give a history of these ships, which have long been known to seafarers under two names-The Down Easters, indicating their origin, and the Cape Horners, as showing their chief trading route, around Cape Horn. In order to round up this history of the last days of America's sailing marine, a chapter is added describing the many European-built square-riggers which ended their days under the Stars and Stripes. In the Appendix will be found a register giving the measurements and tonnage of all ships mentioned in the text. There also will be found the record of two of America's most famous clippers the Young America and the David Crockett, as well as a log of Mackay's last masterpiece, the Glory of the Seas.
