It has long been recognized that the economy of the Eastern Roman empire was complex, with prosperity evident. Archaeological techniques of stratigraphic excavation, systematic rural survey and detailed pottery analysis have made it possible to chart accurately, both a spread of late antique settlement within the eastern Mediterranean, and the diffusion of pot-sherds from their place of production. The eight papers in this volume demonstrate this complexity and prosperity, examining several types of product, as well as the how the economy evolved.
