This is the sixth edition of the standard directory to the waterways of England , Wales and Scotland which was first published in 1939 when the fortunes of the navigable rivers and canals were at a low ebb; many Iying derelict or disused, some carryÌng the trad itional commerciai traffic , but few were prospering. Forty-five years on, the world of waterways is quite different; the canals are well used by pleasure eraft , dereliet navigations are being restared and there is a considerable waterways industry that was probably never envisaged by the designers and engineers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Inland Walenvays of Creat Britain has kept pace with developments. Based on the famous Bradshaw directories, it is the only comprehensive compendium of dimensions , distances and history for each navigable river and canal. Now revised to include details of newly opened wate rways and those undergoing restoration, it has been improved by the addition of small scale sketeh maps of eaeh waterway and numerous photographs from the Author's collection which have not been previously published. This guide is therefore an essenti al handbook for the serious enthusiast , researche rs, regular navigatars or indeed anyone connected with the waterways.
