A new student text. This text has been produced with the express purpose of assisting students following courses of study leading to professional qualification as Chief Mate on merchant vessels. Topics demanding particular attention have been addressed in detail, whilst those which are ancillary to, but an integral part of, navigation - meteorology and bridge management - have been addressed only in outline. Whilst the text is, in the main, directed towards students taking the SQA Navigation examinations the content is not exclusively at that level. Indeed, the Chapters on Sailings, Tides and Celestial Navigation in particular, commence with such revision of earlier studies as may be useful to other students.
