One hundred and fifteen years ago the 700 ton Peninsular & Oriental steamship Chusan arrived in Sydney, the pioneer in a service which has continued under the same house-flag, with but a single break, to the present day. During this period more than sixty other lines, not only British but also German, French, United States, Italian, Greek and Dutch established themselves on the routes between Europe, Australasia and North America. Many were short-lived and of the others only a handful remain in being today, but great or small, all receive their due share of attention in this volume which chronicles the whole history of the Australian and New Zealand sèrvices. Each company is dealt with in a separate chapter, seventy in all, and full fleet lists give details of over 800 ships which have been employed on these routes.
