Volume 3 in the series covers the years 1924-1935 and includes the introduction of the well-known superliners Normandie and Queen Mary, both of which successfully competed for the prestigious Blue Riband award for the fastest transatlantic crossing. In the fuIl between the two World Wars many large and famous vessels were introduced , and the peri od covered by this volume saw the emergence of the Bremen, Europa, Ile de France and L'Atlantique, to name but a few. As with the previous volumes a brief history highlighting the career of each vessel is given, together with detailed specifications and supporting photographs. Arnold Kludas, former technical engineer in a Hamburg shipyard and mariti me adviser for a German publishing firm, is now working in the Deutsche Schiffahrtsmuseum, the equivalent of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. His painstaking research in authenticating and continually updating the entries of all the ships has resulted in each of the English language volumes so far published being received with high acciai m and praise. In the words of Sea Breezes , 'this is a series well worth the trouble of translation… a great servi ce to shiplovers and mariti me historians…’.
